Hear the bass note first
A simple ear-training path for guitarists: find the key from the lowest note of the verse before you hunt for the full chord.
Tabs are a crutch when they are the only input
If every song starts on a website, your ear never has to guess. The shortcut is not perfect pitch. It is finding the lowest note of the verse and treating that as the likely root.
Hum the bass. Match it on the lowest two strings. That note is often the key, or a fifth away. Write it down before you grab a chord dictionary.
A 12-minute ear drill
Pick a song you know well. Mute the guitar. Listen to eight bars. Find the bass note. Then try I, IV, and V in that key on open chords or barre shapes.
If the third chord is minor, you are probably hearing vi. Do not name modes yet. Name functions: home, away, back.
When to use the DECODE idea
DECODE is the longer system in the Breakthrough Bundle: drone the key, extract the bass, check the quality (major/minor), outline the form, then fill color tones.
Tonight you only need the first two letters — drone and extract. The rest waits until those two are boringly reliable.
Questions
What if I cannot find the bass?
Slow the track. Use a speaker, not cheap earbuds. Try matching on the A string only. If it is still unclear, pick a different song with a simpler arrangement.
